The project "Sustainable Energy Education Districts for Informal Settlements" (SEED), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, aims to contribute to promoting the resilience of African cities, and informal settlements in particular.
Together with the local and German project partners, comprehensive and sustainable energy supply concepts (Energy-Hub) are being developed within the framework of the 3-year project, which correspond to the local framework conditions. At the same time, the solutions designed in the project are also intended to have a structure-building and community-strengthening effect. For the step-by-step development of the Energy-Hub, necessary socio-economic analyses of the local population are carried out and their expectations of decentralised energy supply concepts are recorded (WP2). In WP3, in addition to local energy consumption and needs, the local energy infrastructure is analysed and evaluated. Based on these analyses, the technical design of the Energy-Hub is drafted in WP4, the implementation of which is prepared in a case study in WP6. WP5 is dedicated to the business analysis for the development of mobile payment systems and concepts for the long-term financing of such energy supply systems.
The InES is in charge of the joint project, which will be implemented in Kenya and Mozambique from 01.04.21 to 31.03.24. The German partners are Phaesun GmbH and the University of Bayreuth. On the local side, the Technical University Kenya and the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, among others, are involved in the project.
